PERFORMANCE WITH JESTERS
The Ghost of Lear opens a new perspective at William Shakespeare’s play King Lear. The tragedy is plaid by the court jesters, who are trying to convince the King that the decision to divide the kingdom is false and may lead to horrible consequences.
Combining poetic language of King Lear with musical structure of the opera by Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto, the director and the author of the stage version Andrey Borovikov creates one general image for King Lear and the Duke’s Jester Rigoletto, for king’s daughter Cordelia and the Jester’s Daughter Gilda.
Each image of the play incorporates several characters of the great tragedy, all of them are going through an internal fight between Good and Evil, Divine and Infernal, Male and Female. The focus of the play is on the relationship between parents and children. In this performance the love of parents towards their children is compared with is with the all-forgiving love of the God to the people.
